We better use the comment section before the article gets flagged into oblivion.
I feel it's an important piece. The author argues we had a period of freedom of expression that started in the sixties and is now coming to an end. I never thought about it this way, seeing our world rather evolving than involving, and yet, it's hard not to see certain negative phenomena, with some of them becoming very disturbing. One aspect is that they're massive, i.e. there is a crowd of people very emotional and radical about them, and second, this crowd holds real power that is totally unregulated. These emotions and ideas are more or less in line with the current establishment, including the media and major companies, with everybody being afraid to call them out.
I'd say the majority of the society might end up in a tight spot. I mean, people are sympathizing with the causes, may have similar emotions, but then comes a moment when you realize things went too far. So what do you do then? You try to rationalize. Instead of saying some people go too far, you say they're "mostly peaceful", to use one of the many examples. But history is teaching us situations like these are like traps: the more you go in this direction, the more difficult will be to get out, should you wish so. So I think that - unfortunately - the author might be right.
