I don't think the fairness doctrine is worth it in the modern day. 1. Most sources of news that people consume would be exempt as the fairness doctrine only works on broadcast TV. 2. The doctrine was often used as a political cudgel to silence criticism. 3. It usually didn't achieve the desired goal as it's easy for an interested actor to bias the "other side" reporting.
