I was under the impression that Edison was actually more how you describe a 21st century shop, and was more of a CEO type, but I admit that this isn't based on deep knowledge. I often wonder how many of our rosy perceptions of the past are due to a lack of granular information. we kind of know that those exploitative structures exist now because we have access to perspectives at all levels; an inventor or other employee can tweet about this stuff, but if I had created something for Edison and he stole it, he has access to newspaper publishers and I don't.
