How has this evolved over the years?

  The main thing is that, in many cases, it's evolved from mostly being whatever raw materials (syllabus, lecture notes, pointers to resources like textbooks) could be pulled together to often being closer to a course in a box more akin to a MOOC. As I mentioned in another comment it was originally pitched as a resource for would be teachers rather than for students directly.
