Intel's Foveros hits a speedbump as Lakefield gets canned 1 year after launch
- PaulHoule 5y agoWithout ultra-fine optimization a product like that is going to have the cost and power consumption of an i7 and the performance of an Atom. The slightest flaw in power management anywhere in the platform obliterates the power management benefits from the CPU.
- rektide 5y agoAwhhhh saddd. The 1 big core + 4 small Atom cores I thought was really cool, really a great idea. But what really really makes me crave this chip, so much, is the on-package ram. That makes board layout much easier, much smaller. Somewhat mitigated by the Intel class pricing (~$281 suggested MSRP, for both the i3[1] and i5[2] variants), but this seems like the perfect chip for a small powerful mobile computer. I'm thinking, like, headless, pocketable computer with a modest battery & fast USB-C charging. I really wanted to think of this as an upscaled, modernized, powerful Intel Edison, but of course it's really a full PC, not an embedded device. But I think it could have blurred the line, a lot. Instead of doing anything cool, folks just went out & built the same-old laptops with it, and there wasn't anything noteable or special. It was just a so so performing chip with little distinction to users. I continue to believe though this chip, if under $100, used on very-small computers, could have opened entirely new markets. Really sad to see this go. I wish I had hope that Intel would compete on the low end, some day, but it seems like Intel & AMD don't really have interest in down-market competition.
