So this is where all the Mozilla donations go: not to its floundering web browser or development of other open web technology, but to 10-month long YouTube “investigations” of the exact same sort a dozen other media outlets are doing.
Waste of resources aside, this is missing the forest for the trees. They claim that YouTube’s algorithm is the problem, but in regards to the goal of an open and user-empowering web, YouTube is the problem. The implicit argument here, again sad to see coming from Mozilla, is that one siloed website completely dominating web video through predatory pricing and network effects would be totally OK if a bunch of people they liked were put in charge of its recommender systems.
- johnswas 5y agoDidn't know the research behind this article costed an entire mozilla donation. Not sure how other media outlets are doing it.
- wmf 5y agoThat's true, but the donations are so small (proportionately) that they wouldn't matter to Firefox. Firefox needs better strategy, not more money spent on the current failing strategy.
- swiley 5y agoThis. Mozilla has the power to make a bittorant client instantly available to tons of web users which would make self hosting video trivial and make YouTube's recommendation algorithm mostly irrelevant.
