      On MySQL utf8 encoding, ? is the word filter for emoji.

        HN specifically filter out emojis but pass other utf8s and zalgos(which is a well balanced decision IMO)

    You can swear on SA as well. It's only if you aren't logged in to an account that word filters are applied (and some other things e.g. there are a bunch of subforums not visible to outsiders).
