How can one decide to have a baby in 2021 being aware of these kind of events happening now or scheduled to happen rather soon?

- rekabis 5y agoYou don’t. There are about a dozen major tipping points that are slowly coming together that will make the planet unlikely to support more than a billion or two - at best - by 2050. And likely no more than a few hundred million by 2100. Bringing a child into this world today is to doom them to an early and likely violent death as billions of climate refugees tear the world apart in a desperate struggle for survival.
- p_j_w 5y agoI've seen people delude themselves with "my kid might be the one to solve the problem!" Mostly though, it seems people are just selfish.
- llampx 5y agoSpeaking for myself, because I want to have a child and there are plenty of people not being told not to have children. I see this appeal on the same level as "how can one decide not to live an ascetic life in %CURRENT_YEAR%" while corporations and countries decide unilaterally to fuck up our lives for decades to come. When I go to the grocery store and 90% of the produce is wrapped in plastic, I'm not going to take responsibility for buying what I need and throwing the plastic in the trash.
- culopatin 5y agoI don’t understand if you are pro having a kid, against, or “if everyone else is doing it, so am I”. But if you are saying everything around us is worsening our future, I would think you’d be wary of putting a kid in that environment for the next 100 years?
