DoD cancels $10B Jedi contract
- pphysch 5y agoHere's the actual DoD press release: https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Releases/Release/Article/2682992/future-of-the-joint-enterprise-defense-infrastructure-cloud-contract/ https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Releases/Release/Article/26... Notably, they are still focusing on AWS and MS offerings, but also doing further market research. I'm curious about the specifics as to why GCP isn't on the shortlist.
- throwaway3699 5y agoMaybe the DoD protests at Google pushed them away?
- killjoywashere 5y agoGCP hasn't fulfilled Impact Level 4 requirements yet. https://cloud.google.com/security/compliance/il4 https://cloud.google.com/security/compliance/il4
- murgindrag 5y agoGCP is nearly useless for any sort of regulated work. Privacy, compliance, and stability aren't GCP's strong suite (by 'compliance', I mean several types, but to the greatest extent, being able to count on an API you use today existing tomorrow) Rather oddly, Microsoft has historically gotten this nearly perfect. I'm a bit sketched out by the increasingly malicious nature of Windows (spyware, adware, etc.), and if that same mentality translates into other offerings, this may be moot in a few years, but for now, Azure+Office 365 are the preferred vendor if you're dealing with data which really needs to proper controls. (Although I do trust Amazon over Microsoft for the technical aspects of security)
- chmod775 5y ago> Rather oddly, Microsoft has historically gotten this nearly perfect. It's not odd at all. Microsoft had the chance to gain experience in this field since its inception (thanks to developing an ubiquitous OS with good backwards compatibility), whereas delivering products and services to governments is relatively new ground for Google and Amazon.
- gundmc 5y agoGCP also pulled out of consideration the first time around due to activist employee backlash.
- someelephant 5y agoSeems like the scandals at Google affect the bottom line far more than at other companies (Amazon, Coinbase, etc.). The inability to form and push consensus points to a leadership problem in my book.
- codeulike 5y agoThis isn't the contract you're looking for
- a-dub 5y agoclap clap clap
- sciurus 5y agoThis is being discussed at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27750770 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27750770
- daxfohl 5y agoSo much for annual bonuses this year
- kencausey 5y agoI'm repeating myself here but us0r you may be able to fix the capitalization of s/Jedi/JEDI/ if you do it within the next hour.
- McTossOut 5y agoYou forgot the colon
- jvanderbot 5y agoAmazon wins.
- imwillofficial 5y agoI nearly spit out my drink reading this. As a DoD contractor, this is reasonable, but exceedingly surprising news.
- drdrey 5y agoFirst time I encounter this word: conversancy: personal knowledge or information about someone or something
- literallyaduck 5y agoDefense shouldn't trust others with hardware or software. We have seen major security foul ups in cloud computing.
- ineedasername 5y agoThe DoD doesn't have the knowledge base necessary to create its own cloud. Besides, we've seen plenty of major security foul ups in every area of computing. Cloud doesn't strike me as particularly outstanding in that area for military use, especially if it's a completely private cloud separated digitally & physically from all other AWA / MS services in its own hardened security centers and the same segregation from public networks that I would expect of any military system.
- exmsft000 5y agoAs someone who used to work at Microsoft, this amuses the heck out of me. So many people in my division (C+E) spent so long working on this ridiculous warmongering contract, and in the end it was all for nothing. Well, good.
- AnonMO 5y ago“multi-vendor contract“ Microsoft will definitely be involved in the next contract when it comes to products such as this “all for nothing” doesn’t exist. What ever they were working on internally will work its way into the new program.
- twirlock 5y ago>new administration caves to demands of billionaire
- slownews45 5y agoThey are going to rebid this - maybe with multiple awards possible.
- alberth 5y agoThis seems like a win for Oracle. What I imagine the outcome will be is dozens of “smaller” billion $ government cloud contracts totally more than the original $10B.
- suyash 5y agoSeems like they will break into smaller contracts and Oracle has a good chance of winning those if not this big one.
- ineedasername 5y agoPer the article it looks like it will still just be Amazon & MS under consideration: "available market research indicates that these two vendors are the only Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) capable of meeting the Department’s requirements"
