Empresarios and land grants seem to have led to different settlement patterns at the start for the Anglos than the rigid early Spanish or hilariously insular hill country Germans. “Spanish colonists came organized once the missions and presidios were already built, Anglos posted up stick houses by themselves on land they ostensibly owned and tried not to get slaughtered by comanche” is the vibe I usually get.
