  There's a big difference between ruling the world and having the largest economy, which is what the article actually discusses.

    Yes. And why would you want to rule the world when it is injurious to your country's well-being. The US has spent trillions and trillions of dollars over the last 50 years or so being top-dog militarily, while letting the country itself fall to pieces both in infrastructure and socially. For both people and for countries, there is a happy medium where one 'has enough' and is capable of enjoying a richer, more pleasant life rather than stay on the rat-race to be top-dog which leads to an early grave. Being one of many 'poles' is far better than forever striving to maintain a unipolar world.
