I think a lot of people eventually come up with a workflow that works for them rather than copying others. As for keyboard shortcuts, I've found that there are certain people who will continue to use repetitive keystrokes without ever considering there's a quicker way to accomplish what they're doing and others will spend time learning the keyboard shortcuts, macro usage, regular expressions, etc to make themselves more efficient regardless of whether they've been mentored or not.
