Appreciate your detailed, instructive, welcoming, and tailored message, Dang.
I personally interpet "using HN for promotion" as a means of getting some tangible gain - you're selling a product/services, or otherwise stand to gain something tangible, for example. Is it really self-promotion to write a detailed, well-researched piece on an interesting niche, and submit that? If so, that interpretation seems counter-productive to me. We should want to encourage such participation in the community.
All that to say that I thought this was a fantastic submission for HN, well in line with other interesting topics, so I was surprised to see you stress the self-promotion aspect so much. It just didn't seem applicable to me.
Now whether the topic or article as-written it strikes a cord with users, that's something that voting is well-suited to facilitate.

To the author - I thought the article was a great read!
- dang 5y agoSubmitting only articles from your own site generally counts as "using HN for promotion" since people usually do that to promote their site. Of course, there's a spectrum here, ranging on the one hand from blogspammers who use HN as a dumping ground for dozens of their articles, to the technical blogger who maybe posts something once or twice a year about their original investigations. The former is on the spammy side, the latter is not, especially when the account is participating in the community in other good-faith ways.
