For my 20s, I did consulting, first for a Big 4 firm and then a smaller agency. I got to fly to a bunch of places, work on some cool projects, and learn a lot. There was another side to it all, though - a real lack of control or say in what projects I was put on and what my schedule looked like next week.
Then, one year, I turned 30 and got married and decided that this kind of inconsistency was driving me crazy. I took a job with far less travel, just a day trip to an office or customer within driving range a few times a quarter, and it’s been a lot better. Covid worked out even better as I wasn’t going anywhere at all.
- the_only_law 5y agoWhat sort of consulting was this? Were you doing software or some form of business consulting. The ideas of getting on a plane and fly out somewhere sort of jobs have somewhat appealed me, because I don’t have any real ties anywhere and get bored easily.
- sylens 5y agoIt was security consulting, and there were two types of projects - the one week "pentest in a box" type engagements, and then much longer "process/implementation work" which was focused on things like redoing somebody's RBAC from scratch, including lots of stakeholder interviews. The second type had its own issues - it can get pretty tedious going back to the same suburban office park every week for several months in a row.
