- underseacables 5y agoI think there was a deeper reason: Iran. If you look at where Iraq is positioned, and you consider that we had already invited Afghanistan, by invading Iraq you’ve practically surrounded the country of Iran, a major threat to peace and safety in the region. Imagine if Afghanistan, and Iraq, had been stabilized and in someway controlled by America. It’s far easier to run operations into Iran from Baghdad than it was from Istanbul.
