The LIGO observatory, in the United States (Washington and Louisiana) was the first to make gravitational wave detection. I agree that the US often lets itself fall behind in some areas (Superconducting Supercollider!), but gravitational wave astronomy is an area where the US is significantly participating at the forefront of research. I hope we continue to invest further!
