Audacity Forked

OK, there are more forks!
This is one of the first ones i've found that reverts telemetry.
If anyone has a more reliable one, please share :)
- coldtea 5y agoWell, a fork is a dime a dozen. Any random zealot can do it to "show them". A fork that is actually maintened and creates a new community or absorbs the old one, is what's actually useful. Though, if the intent is to just release a version without telemetry, that should be easy to maintain.
- marto1 5y agoPS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(. — Linus Torvalds, 1991
- nailer 5y agoThe topic is forks. The Linux kernel isn’t a fork. Better examples would be xemacs or iojs.
- pjmlp 5y ago> 1998: Many major companies such as IBM, Compaq and Oracle announce their support for Linux. -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Linux https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Linux Not only it wasn't a fork, it probably wouldn't have gotten that far without those big pockets.
- maverick74 5y agoYeah, they can be a "drop in the ocean". ahahah I wasn't even aware of the problems the project is having, but this seems sort of a reliable fork (so i decided to share). :)
- dredmorbius 5y agoIt's not so much the starting up as the not-shutting-down.
- DrSiemer 5y agoThe top comment on the telemetry commit [1] indicates it is disabled by default, and on compiling as well. Their reasoning for adding it sounds legit. Am I missing something here, what is the point of this fork? [1] https://github.com/audacity/audacity/pull/835 https://github.com/audacity/audacity/pull/835
- labawi 5y agoThe commit message indicates it is opt-in, but if you read their privacy policy [1], there is 0 mention of any right to choose and they consider it their right to get data about your system (overreach) and data necessary for law enforcement, litigation and authorities’ requests (very disturbing). With a privacy policy like this, I don't really care what the commit message says, as it looks like they are preparing for more. They even consider it their right to collect data for litigation to defend their interests, so they might start sending audio fingerprints. BTW, they shoved a CLA onto (some?) developers, most likely so they can release a non-GPL version. Fork is in order. - villgax 5y agoSo much drama for an offline piece of FOSS, why the hell does law enforcement even need access to details about an offline app. lol.
- mousepilot 5y agoI'm really happy that there are folks like you. I'm a big fan of audacity!
- staz 5y agoApparently the news and context that I missed is that Audacity was bought by a company that plan to monetize it. With paying option and cloud stuff apparently? can't find a source for that part in english. https://www.audacityteam.org/audacity-musescore-announcement/ https://www.audacityteam.org/audacity-musescore-announcement...
