Ask HN: Recommend Some Logic Gate Tutorials and Examples?
Hello HN!
I was looking to learn a little more about logic gates and how they fit together to perform simple functions.
In the past, whenever I've seen gate tutorials, they introduce the basic AND/OR/XOR types of gates. Which is great, but I learn well from lots of written examples that show how and why the parts fit together the way they do.
So I was hoping that someone could recommend a logic gates 101 type article or series of articles, that start with explaining the real absolute basics, and then add lots of simple examples. On top of that, combining those simple examples into more complex ones is also something I'd love to read.
I hope that makes sense! I am not sure how to best search for such a thing, nor am I sure of how to measure the quality of any articles I do find.
Help!?
- _benj 5y agoHey! What you are looking for is called “digital design” and my personal favorite is a book called “digital design and computer architecture” by Harris. It takes you all the way from the mathematical idea of a gate to combining them into latches, memories, counters, and all the way to making your own processor! The initial theory is very important because it helps you solve equations and simplify your gate circuits. Good luck!
