This has more to do with bureaucratic unwillingness to admit to mistakes than anything else. This is what you get when everyone in the decision chain is just doing what they are “supposed to do”, without giving it a second thought.
According to the article, it’s pretty clear that no death certificate was ever filed, which appears to be a requirement in France. So there’s even a formal error that should void the procedure that followed. This readily demonstrates the unwillingness and compartmentalization at play here.
I’m in a similar but different situation due to fictional health insurance costs. In Germany, public health insurance cost is calculated based on your income, with a hard cap at the top. I’ve had very little to no income for a couple of years. Due to a procedural error, I was charged the maximum amount. I’m fighting this for 9 years now and have to deal with constant harassment and ballooning debt north of 35k EUR, most of which is entirely invented but is collected on with the full force of law enforcement. Any attempt to find an agreeable solution failed. It’s obvious to anyone looking at the facts that money is wanted that never existed in the first place. A dozen employees of the insurance even admitted to that fact. Still, they won’t change the order because they feel they can’t. No one wants to be in the position to explain an auditor why 30k+ of outstanding payments were dropped. It’s as simple as that.
My life has been hell at times due to that. The drones don’t care. They just want to do what is expected of them. It doesn’t matter if it destroys lives.
It appears that the only way out now is to declare bankruptcy. Which appears to be fine with them. They end up getting nothing at all, not even the clearly owed amounts, but that’s fine because it’s “procedurally correct” and no one may end up in the hot seat. Except me of course.
