One point I rarely find when something like this happens is the question of why was the software sold. It's likely that if, for example, people had a culture of giving to OSS developers the acquisition may have not happened or even made economic sense.
It's easy to say "bad companies, let's fork!", but who's going to maintain it in the long run?
