Israeli camouflage tech makes soldiers ‘invisible’
- pbak 5y agoStrong middle-eastern Frodo vibes on this one
- chrisseaton 5y agoSort of sounds like a commercial alternative to thermal sheeting and camouflage net over chicken wire, which is something that's often used at the moment but is extraordinarily heavy, especially for dismounted combat.
- FridayoLeary 5y agoArticle doesn't have a lot of information. It reads more like a regurgitated press release. Still, this looks fascinating, i wonder if it will work.
- jandrese 5y agoSure, it is made of "advanced polymers". In other words it is one of those thermal blankets painted to look like a rock.
- dane-pgp 5y ago> “As far as we know, or as far as we saw in other armies around the world, we are very unique” Isn't that the point, though?
- pagade 5y agoMore interesting details on the company's 'catalogue': https://polarisolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Rajuga%20Catalogue%20Basic%20+%20Pro.pdf https://polarisolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Rajug...
- marcodiego 5y agoImpressive how "low-tech" some products look. It is sad armed conflicts still involves human lives.
- unearth3d 5y agoOnly because the ruled class allows to ruling class to think that life is cheap.
- smnrchrds 5y agoIt is quickly moving towards endangering human lives on one side of the conflict (the poorer side who lacks the technology). When the transition is complete, we will likely see more conflicts, as the cost of the war (both in terms of money and in domestic public opinion) significantly decreases for one side.
- tim333 5y agoThe trend actually seems to be going the other way - less deaths. See Pinker and all that.
- Nextgrid 5y ago> we actually registered a patent on it in many countries around the world Isn’t this counter-productive for military tech that’s supposed to give your troops an advantage in combat?
- dvlat 5y ago..unless one does not plan to go at war with countries where it registered patents
- thekid314 5y agoCould they also prevent it from being made by competitors and then refuse to distribute it in those countries? If not denying it to those countries at least delaying it in bureaucracy?
- throwaway09223 5y agoUh. Patent registrations are public. Details about a registered patent in any country will be available to all countries worldwide. It is also unlikely that a country would opt to abide by intellectual property treaties when at war.
- thakoppno 5y agoI believe that portions of the enigma machine technology were patented and later reviewed for exploitation by the British. https://www.cryptomuseum.com/crypto/enigma/patents/ https://www.cryptomuseum.com/crypto/enigma/patents/
- noduerme 5y agoPure speculation here... the only ground combat scenario Israel really has to worry about is with Hezbollah. So the calculation must be that either Iran doesn't have the materials expertise to manufacture this, or else they can and Israel has either compromised the supply chain, has technology to see through it on some other part of the EM spectrum, or both. For all we know it lights up like a Christmas tree if you hit it with millimeter wave from a drone. Either way, the Iranians probably will assume this and therefore not pursue the technology. Maybe they learned it was already leaked to Iranian intelligence, so by making it public now they raise too many doubts for the enemy to use it.
- HKH2 5y agoWhat about infrared?
- Protostome 5y agoDoes infrared work even if the outside temperatures are 35c-40c? Summer in the middle east is around those temperatures, which mostly overlap human core temp
- thekid314 5y agoI kind of played with this idea when the military was deployed in Boston. Now that their uniform and paint signatures are designed to camouflage them from infrared signatures in the forests they stick out like a sore thumb in the city. https://www.daviddegner.com/photography/military-and-police-deployed-during-protests/ https://www.daviddegner.com/photography/military-and-police-...
- solarmist 5y agoActual pictures of what it looks like. https://polarisolutions.com/2021/01/16/the-new-camouflage-for-idf-regiments/ https://polarisolutions.com/2021/01/16/the-new-camouflage-fo... Pretty neat, but it’s traditional camouflage which is custom to different environments.
- gruez 5y agoThat's... underwhelming. From the title I was expecting some sort of adaptive camouflage from ghost recon future soldier[1] or something. [1] https://youtu.be/ufqtU8ByDYs?t=130 https://youtu.be/ufqtU8ByDYs?t=130
- solarmist 5y agoYup. Me too

- tweaktastic 5y agoThey say that this can be used to safely move injured soldiers out of the battelfield. I am having hard time understanding that. From the looks of it, this seems like something that dwells in well with the background. Moving subject will definitely be visible as background doesn't stay constant isn't it? But this is definitely something very innovative and unique.
- mlon_eusk 5y agohave you seen invisible man?
- tweaktastic 5y agoNo, I haven't watched this movie.

- aaron695 5y agoAfter the entire mess of the 'Universal Camouflage Pattern' I'm surprised there's not more research in this - The $5 Billion Army Camouflage That Failed to Hide its Soldiers https://www.warhistoryonline.com/instant-articles/army-camouflage-that-cost-more.html https://www.warhistoryonline.com/instant-articles/army-camou... $ idea, start selling Kit 300 cargo pants.
