Author claims evidence for effectiveness of face masks is weak, and provides citations. However, one citation states that mask use "seems to be linked to relevant protection during close contact scenarios by limiting pathogen-containing aerosol and liquid droplet dissemination."
Just the sort of scenarios children face in school.
So the choice the paper presents is between children using masks and risking elevated exposure to carbon dioxide (whose treatment is quick and simple), and not using masks and risking COVID (which may have life-long lingering non-treatable effects).
The author recommends the latter.

Is raised co2 for (I guess hours a day) harmless or could it affect something like brain development? Could it hinder learning if nothing else? How common are life long effects from COVID for children? Is it worse than the effects of other diseases we don’t use masks for like flu or mono?
