If this is true it's not great news.
I wonder, does the parking pawl engage at power-off?
- toomuchtodo 5y agoIt's supposed to engage Park if the driver's door is open and weight is removed from the driver's seat.
- rpmisms 5y agoAlmost. It's supposed to engage park if it's stopped and the driver's door is opened.
- toomuchtodo 5y agoEven with the door shut it’ll put itself into park if I lift my butt off the seat while in neutral in a car wash.
- rpmisms 5y agoInteresting. My 2014 S doesn't do that. Will test it in the 3 I should be getting soon.
- toomuchtodo 5y ago2018 Model S. Will test it out in our Y when I take delivery end of month.
- alasdair_ 5y agoDo you also have the seatbelt unlatched? My S only does this if the seatbelt is also off.
- toomuchtodo 5y agoI don’t recall :/ will do some tests tomorrow in the driveway.
- toomuchtodo 5y agoTested. Seatbelt off, door open, Model S shifts to park within 1-2 seconds. Even when shifting to another gear from park, it shifts back to park rapidly if door is open and driver seatbelt is unbuckled. Seatbelt on, door open, vehicle does not shift to park.
- tyingq 5y agoI imagine a lot of bets are off with a fire going. Lots of wires burning and shorting, or otherwise not getting the power they need to do their job.
- nitrogen 5y agoMany years ago I had a vehicle catch fire while I was driving it. The first indication was that the digital speedometer started showing random numbers for this very reason.
- userbinator 5y agoIf everything is electronically activated, and a lot of the wires and control electronics are destroyed by a fire, then all bets are off. Mechanical linkages are going to survive the heat of a fire quite a bit longer than wires and electronics.
