Don't buy it on the assumption that you can get funding or resell the domain. Do you currently have an income? How long could you live for if you lost your job? Do you have a business plan / code / design for your product? Have you discussed the domain name with a few other people? $3,000 isn't a lot of money for a domain, but it is when you don't have the money :)
