To me this seems to be part of the larger post-Cold-War promise of globalism which would produce cheaper goods even while our wages stagnated. Obviously that promise didn't pan out as healthcare, housing, and many more things have skyrocketed in price. Sure, we got cheap smartphones that are good enough but it doesn't really matter if that savings can't offset your cost of living in a city, even a medium sized one. This all is coming to a head that likely will result in some major shakeups politically and economically. What that will look like I can't really say but I'll hazard a guess that the rise of American fascism and reactionary politics is definitely going to become mainstream (Trump was just the start in my opinion).
