Oregonians Allowed to Pump Their Own Gas – – – For Two Days
- Normille 5y agoUgh! --must stop speed-reading late at night, with tired eyes, on tiny mobile screen. I read that as "Orang-Utans Allowed to Pump Their Own Gas..." and the mind was temporarily boggled.
- devetec 5y agoThat is a world I want to live in.
- bronzeage 5y agoWhy would there be a ban on gas self-service in the first place?
- prepend 5y agoLuddites trying to protect crappy jobs. Are electric car owners allowed to plug in their own cars in Oregon?
- underseacables 5y agoHave you heard about a requirement to wear a mask outdoors? Same people.
- boredwithlife 5y agoNot only that, but the gas stains actually close at night because it's not profitable to staff the early hours. I've almost been stranded before due to this.

- Tempest1981 5y ago2017? What happened? Did it pass?
- kayfox 5y agoYes. https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2017R1/Measures/Overview/HB2482 https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2017R1/Measures/Overv...
- excalibur 5y ago> The state has instituted exceptions for certain areas, such as remote, rural regions and tribal lands. Sooo the whole state minus Portland?
- freedomben 5y agoThe first time I drove in Oregon I had no idea that you weren't allowed to pump your own gas. I pulled up to a gas station and proceeded to pump my own gas, something I had been doing for many years in a dozen other states. A minute or two into pumping, I suddenly saw a man come rushing out of the store, running toward me shouting. It scared the hell out of me! I thought something was really wrong, like somebody smoking a cigarette while filling up a gas can or something. Turned out I was breaking the law. He finished the pumping for me and warned me not to try anything like that again. Welcome to Oregon.
- devetec 5y agoWow. I don't know what I'd do in that situation. Now that I think of it, it actually might be logical to not allow people to pump their own gas. Safety and all that.
- caymanjim 5y agoI'm in New Jersey, and while it's illegal here too, no one seems care that much. I usually let the attendant operate the pump for me, but I've done it myself a few dozen times over the decades, and I see other customers help themselves every so often. If there's a card reader on the pump and the attendant isn't around, I'll pump my own.
- doktorhladnjak 5y agoI prefer the opposite situation where the car with Oregon plates is patiently sitting in a Washington state gas station, wondering what is taking the attendant so long
- barbazoo 5y agoHow do you pay them? Do you go inside? Does the attendant have a card reader?
- freedomben 5y agoI've only ever paid with a card, but you basically just hand the card to the attendant and they run it through the card reader on the pump just like you would in a different state. As far as I can tell there is nothing unique about the pumps in Oregon compared to everywhere else.
