- throwaway158497 5y agoBased on my experience with India, they will try to pay 20-30% more than next best comopany in that region you live in.
- Zaheer 5y agoYes many of the top tech companies are now hiring across Europe (and in fact have been). Ex. https://eng.lyft.com/introducing-lyft-engineering-kyiv-2884d1bba69a https://eng.lyft.com/introducing-lyft-engineering-kyiv-2884d... Salaries are definitely adjusted. To get a feel for salaries: - https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Netherlands/ https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Netherland... - https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Ukraine/ https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Ukraine/ - https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/London/ https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/London/
- tester756 5y agoBut isn't it like that e.g EU branch of $FAANG company does less cool stuff? e.g Google EU does CRUDs and maintains GCP meanwhile cool stuff is being done in MV?
- arebop 5y agoNo. The top managers are in silicon valley, but the key engineers and product people are distributed.
- barbazoo 5y agoAcquaintance over at Google in the Pacific Northwest works on invoicing so I can believe that that's true without even leaving the country.
- phreeza 5y agoNo, lots of interesting Google teams in EMEA, for example Lens https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/90450385816167110-product-analyst-lens-quality-growth-analytics/ https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/90450385816167110-pr...
- joshvm 5y agoGoogle Zurich is the European research hub. They do a lot of very cool stuff, particularly mobile deep learning. Salaries are commensurate with the Bay Area, but Switzerland is as if not more expensive (though arguably higher standard of living than SF). Zurich in particular gets a lot of engineering talent out of places like ETH.
- xxpor 5y agoHey, maintaining GCP is probably more interesting than you think ;)
- tester756 5y agoYou're right
- wc1b5ja 5y agoSomewhat related - do you know if those companies will hire US-based engineers for the same European positions? Or are those positions primarily set aside for engineers already in Europe?
- joshvm 5y agoThis is partly a labour law thing. The EU benefits from freedom of movement and work, so people can apply to different countries without worrying about immigration. Residents outside the EU (third countries) may have to prove why they'd be a better choice than an EU applicant; rather the onus is on the company. That will also depend on the role and the employee but generally companies will prefer to hire locally if they have international offices. It's easier to move an existing employee to a different country than hire internationally, usually there are specific visas for that case.
- b20000 5y agoyou can work for FAANG in europe but compensation will be much lower. that is why people move to the US. of course costs in the US are way higher.
