Ask KN: How do I build a directory of businesses in my city?
I own a few very good domain names for a great B2B and B2C industries, ending with .NYC (I live in NYC).
I want to build a directory of businesses where I can both enter businesses listings and also people could eventually make their own entries.
I am not a programmer but I am well versed in WordPress and in the past, I have used Joomla and Drupal. And I can do some IT stuff
Any ideas on how can I go about doing that?
- brudgers 5y agoStart with the simplest thing that might work. Paper and pencil and walking around your neighborhood? Eat the elephant one bight at a time.
- SMAAART 5y agoAnd technology-wise, what would be "the simplest thing that might work"? aside from hand coded HTML? Ideally businesses would make their own entries and possibly update their own 1-page listing.
- brudgers 5y agoA photocopier. The hard part is not the technology. The hard thing is doing the non-technical work that makes technology applicable. Ideally, we would have been born rich.
- codingdave 5y agoWell, the yellow pages went online after they stopped printing physical books a few years ago. So an online list of most businesses already exists - are you just wanting to scrape that, or did you have some added value in mind?
- SMAAART 5y agoIt's a vertical/niche market, branded for NYC. It's a fun-side project more than anything else.
