  There was an All In episode about unions recently. Basically they said, unions are necessary in places with monopolies (ex mining towns) and workers need protection from company abuse of power, but unions are harmful where high mobility is possible: high performers would leave because they are not paid enough, and low performers would not leave, union protects them. Eventually a union will slow down the company.
