One big factor behind the difference of coverage the fact the Chinese are really restrictive with releasing footage: maybe you noticed in the article that the landing happened May 14 but the footage showed up just now.
So it's much less interesting for eg CNN to plan a big feature for the touch down if they can only count of stock footage.
- varispeed 5y agoPlenty of time to create a video like this without actually landing on Mars.
- mahkeiro 5y agoThis is nonsense, If you want to fake it you can also do it before…

- ineedasername 5y agoAnd pretty easy for US monitoring of launches to determine if no launch corresponded to this and tell the world it was fake. If was a fake, it would require a fair number of people outside the PRC to remain silent.
- gpt5 5y agoThe landing was confirmed with US satellite footage of the landing site: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-57427797 https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-57427797
- JKCalhoun 5y agoGood point. Never mind that at this point it's "yesterday's news" (and then some!).
- godelski 5y agoAlso note that when the rover _did_ touchdown there was news about it. Same when it was launched. But the slow release of footage and updates makes it harder to tell compelling stories. Stories happen when things are released, such as now.
- baybal2 5y ago> maybe you noticed in the article that the landing happened May 14 but the footage showed up just now. Communist party centennial is on July 1. The propaganda ministry have a reserve of "highly patriotic news," which they throw on around big events.
- elihu 5y agoThat may be a big part of it, but also it takes a long time to get large files from Mars to Earth. It seems at least plausible that the videos are released now because it took that long to send, or was queued up at a lower priority than other lower-bandwidth data.
