A Point of View – The Culture War [audio]
- Cybotron5000 5y agoQuelle surprise - writer for the Torygraph believes culture war is a super-relevant distraction from incompetence and corruption! Seriously though, I understand and agree with her point that culture really does matter (though it is perhaps somewhat ironic that the tories are gleefully neglecting people who work in areas of culture/humanities etc. in favour of STEM) and that people are idiotic enough that these things can spill into other areas/violence, but ultimately endlessly arguing about grimey statues of people who have been dead for hundreds of years, or pictures of largely irrelevant cultural figures etc is demonstrably a ridiculous waste of time and mental energy for everyone involved, especially when we are in the middle of a pandemic/climate change/increasing extremism/global resurgence in authoritarianism etc etc. It just plays into the hands of those disreputable actors who want to divide and rule, distract and foment dissension in our societies… So maybe put up some new statues, throw eggs at the old ones (or better still, educate people about the truth of our shared histories), compromise (esp. on things that don’t effect your life directly?), let people directly concerned/effected democratically decide, calmly debate it publically, let the facts be aired, taught and transparently discussed, even when it is inconvenient - that ought to be the source of our strength and resilience as broadly democratic modern societies - don’t let it be judo’ed against us!
