General Magic’s telescript. Programs that moved instead of data
- theamk 5y agoWith JavaScript-based websites, everyone can witness what does “Remote Programming” looks like: rarely, there are pages which really benefit from “remote programming” (JavaScript interactivity)... but in most cases, there is no benefit for user, just a lot of slowdown. A few-years-old tablet is basically unusable for web browsing - even pages with rarely changing contents, such as news articles and weather forecasts, require hundreds of megabytes of RAM and minutes of CPU time. Turns out there is a trade off between speed of development of new software, and a resource usage of the resulting programs. And allowing one to write code to be run on someone else’s computer means there is no longer a need to optimize very hard, as it is not your CPU time that is being wasted.
