The disturbances to date seem about on the same security threat level as maybe protests or certain natural disasters...not too bad in other words.
(Maybe until we get a leaked Pentagon video of the abduction of a flight deck crew, or an F-18 being crumpled up like a soda can or something)
The "threat model" seems to come from a contingency planning mindset. Forward looking, subjective, but based on past experiences where: 1) Any technology "plowshares" humans can learn about can generally be turned into weapons, so to speak, so any new tech could be a security threat and 2) humans would fall behind other nations' research and watch their own nation or civilization crumble because they were basically ignorant and stubborn compared to their neighbors. And that would be a pretty awful security problem.
Personally I see a lot that could be explained by less-intelligent animalistic behavior in these events, but even if THAT is the case, it may indicate that the physics we see may be compatible with our known physics models.
And if THAT is the case...pretty big deal. Just too bad national security has to be the carrot on the stick.
