Super Glass Material Is Almost as Strong as Steel
- Black101 5y ago> A cracked cell phone screen could become a thing of the past If true, I bet that a cellphone manufacturer will buy the tech and not use it...
- peter_d_sherman 5y ago>"To make super-strong glass, the researchers have long set their sights on alumina, an oxidized version of aluminum that happens to possess some of the strongest chemical bonds on Earth. Putting alumina in glass, the scientists hypothesized, would make the new material super robust. But in their first attempts, they struggled to produce it. When they tried to make glass with alumina in it, murky crystals of silicon dioxide would form on the glass against the surface of the container, so that the glass was no longer see-through." PDS: On a side note, I wonder if Alumina would be a good future material to make semiconductors with... On the one hand, Aluminum is a great conductor -- but we want something between a conductor and a resistor. If Aluminum bonded with Oxygen (as Alumina is) increases the resistance, then maybe what we're looking for is some version of Alumina with enough Oxygen to make it somewhat, but not overly resistant... Or some amount of voltage, which balances Alumina's natural resistance... Then maybe if it could be fabricated on wafers in nano layers... Maybe some oxide of Copper or Silver -- would also work well...
