One thing I like about this article is that it tries to evaluate how pure functional designs handle state. I've found a lot of posts give examples of programs with no state and show how elegant a functional implementation is. Most real-world programs do have a lot of state within them, so for a fair comparison, we should see how a functional design handles transitioning that state, compared to an imperative approach.
