The race to build a commercial fusion reactor hots up
- PaulHoule 5y agoOne error in that article is that it says fusion reactors aren't connected with nuclear weapons. Actually D+T fusion produces huge numbers of high energy neutrons which can be multiplied and fed into a depleted or natural uranium blanket to breed Pu239 for weapons use. Fusion produces more neutrons per unit of energy and could have smaller thermal signature than a fission plant to make weapons grade Pu. You'd need to develop fission fuel reprocessing but not necessarily uranium enrichment. A spalation source driven by a particle accelerator could do the same with an even smaller thermal signature including the power plant -- making it easy to hide. The tough problem is increasing the uptime of the particle accelerator 100x or so.
