Isn't it common in US to work less than 40 hours/week?
In my country most companies offer 35 hours/week jobs, the country's average is 33 hours and it's illegal to work more than 48 hours including extra hours, but I know that in countries like Germany, the Netherlands or France is less than 30 (Germany is 26 if I am not wrong).
It's mostly public jobs and white collars here, I work as a software engineer for a large insurance company and the standard insurance contract is 33 hours a week, I have a different contact and nominally I should do 40 hours, but working from home I do about 30, full salary (nobody checks the hours anymore).
During the pandemic I had no chances of going on holiday, so I kept working and I still have 40 days of paid vacation left from 2020+2021.
It's pretty standard here.
- electriclove 5y agoNot common in the US. In the US, 40 hours/week is more like a minimum.
- moepstar 5y ago>Germany is 26 if I am not wrong Actually, no - but it'd be nice. 'round here, most of the time you're looking at 40-hour weeks and 35 if it is a larger and/or unionized company. Of course, everything else (like 4 day work-weeks, wfh, whatnot) is up for negotiation.
- peoplefromibiza 5y agoI'm talking about country's averages, Germany has a lot of part time or reduced time contracts (like the geringfügige Beschäftigung - mini job - introduced by Schroeder) so the average is lower than 35, which is the most common contract in many European countries.
- moepstar 5y agoOk, sorry - got that wrong then, as did another commenter... Still, the current average is 34,8 hours as of 2019[0], that already counts part-time workers in. There's also a table that lists other countries for comparison - Europes average is 37hrs/week, with Turkey being at the top with 45,4 hours a week. Also, it mentions that for comparisons' sake, you really shouldn't mix part time with full-time workers... - thiht 5y ago> France is less than 30 No, in France the usual is 35. It’s possible to work more in exchange for RTTs (additional vacation days) but the norm is 35.
- peoplefromibiza 5y agoThe country's average is 30, exactly because 35 is the most popular arrangement and those who work less than that are much more than those that work more than that. Italy has an average of 33, but the most common contract is for 36 hours (8x4 + 4x1)
- thiht 5y agoOops, I didn’t realize you were talking about averages. Sorry!
