What are we, as an industry, going to do about our complete abdication of responsibility for taking care of people’s personal data? It can’t just be up to individuals installing protective browser plugins. What would a future where people have real privacy on their computers look like? And is there a way to get there from where we are now?
- president 5y agoIt can never happen because there is a never ending supply of people who will set aside ethics for personal gain. I have worked for over a decade in the software industry in over 5 different companies large and small and I have never once seen an example where a leader put ethics over profits. Most small businesses live or die based on their next sale and most large businesses need growth at any cost to legally satisfy their fiduciary obligations to their shareholders.
- BSVogler 5y agoLobby for something like GDPR. Half the stuff in this thread is illegal in the EU.
