Anec-tangent: when I left a start-up, I turned in the company laptop. Then when I asked if I could buy it back (since it nicer than my personal laptop), they just gave it to me for free. That was a really nice and totally unexpected gesture. Later I gave that laptop to someone to learn to code on and now they're a full-time software engineer.
