Miami Building Collapse
- cratermoon 5y agoI can't wait to hear the postmortem on this one.
- dredmorbius 5y agoFor those interested in following the development and best current understanding of the incident, Wikipedia now have an article on the collapse: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfside_condominium_building_collapse https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfside_condominium_building_...> I've long observed that for complex evolving stories, this is virtually always the best way of getting a current snapshot of knowlede, rather than wading through the transactional style of news reports, which are both highly repetitive (rehashing existing knowledge), highly transactional (noting incremental new information), and often get trapped in early narratives. As an example of that last, the current description is as a "partial building collapse", while a far more accurate description to me would be "a total collapse of part of the structure". The first phrase suggests the collapse didn't evolve completely. The second makes clear that the destruction was complete for the affected part of the building. As I write, Wikipedia notes that there's no determined cause, though both structural defects and sinkholes are suspected, and that re-roofing and a recertification inspection were ongoing.
