Water shortages: Why some Californians are running out in 2021 and others aren’t
- aliasEli 5y agoThis is a fine example of the tragedy of the commons [0]. Every local actor is trying to their best but the overall result is far worse than the global optimum. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons
- shaftway 5y agoVice has a series called abandoned (available on Hulu). The fourth episode deals with water in California with a focus on the Salton Sea and Owens Lake. Maybe there's a more nuanced view to take, but it paints a pretty bleak picture of Owens Lake and the problems caused because of Los Angeles piping the water out. It's also pretty annoying to see Los Angeles not required to cut water usage given their extensive network of canals pulling water from the rest of the state.
