Building YouTube Competitor – looking for advice and co-founders
Hi Everyone - looking for advice and potentially co-founders. Really hope you can help.
I really don't like the path we are going down in tech. I think we need new social networks that give back our digital property rights.
First product: I'm very passionate about building a new YouTube that is completely decentralised & censorship resistant. I have a couple questions, would love your thoughts:
1- do/will people really care about a YouTube clone that is decentralised/censorship resistant? how do you think about this? what about YT network effects?
2- how do you create something full decentralised but stop the terrorists/bad guys etc?
3- solana (to me) seems the cheapest and most scalable blockchain to build on for text/numerical data and IPFS for the thumbnails&videos. Do you agree? is there any other projects you would recommend I look at?
There is many other questions, but these are the most important. Thank you for taking the time.
- philipswood 5y agoThis sounds like a non-starter to me. Alternative established video services already exist and struggle. IF you could take on YT it sounds like you'd need to disrupt it (according to the original definition of disruption). In other words for this case find an under- or un-served market niche where the features of your product matters and can compete and win and then expand _somehow_ from there. If I understand correctly Vimeo differentiates itself by offering features that matter to more premium video creators. Who cares enough about decentralized uncensorable video distribution to use an alternative non-YT product? What do they need or want? What business model can work when offering a service to them? These are the business issues. On a technical side, fully distributed video storage and streaming sounds like it has a hefty set of technical challenges.
