My rails experience has mainly been dabbling with some admiration from afar, but I've liked that the criticism levied against it at times is that it's a framework for building basecamp. That's why it's good! It's been built with a purpose and it turns out that purpose is close enough to others (like building shopify) that it's useful for lots of companies. I'd much rather use a tool like that than one that shallowly appealed to every hypothetical user.
