From the article:
> Of course, this debate is taking place in a broader context of discrimination against transgender people, and that is why the question is never free of ideology. However, the extreme nature of this particular situation really demonstrates the need to set up a stricter legal framework for transgender inclusion in sports, and especially elite sports.
You say:
> It's an outlier that's being pushed in as a substitute to set the framing for the entire discussion as if broad policy should be generalized from an extreme outlier.
That's not at all what the article is saying. The article is specifically talking about this particular situation.
- kristopolous 5y agoIt's a political football. An internal technicality of an institutions rules committee being presented as an international debate is the politicizing thing here. This inflation is done all the time to push a political agenda. The "welfare queen" to ban humanitarianism, Willie Horton to create the modern carceral state. This is super common. Most of the time it fails, like with Garcia Zarate or Juan Leonardo Quintero to try to demonize all Hispanic immigrants. The first to cover this was far right rags like dailywire and newspunch in 2017 or so. Is this new to you?
- herodoturtle 5y agoThanks for editing your comment to add the insight that you did. My original interpretation before your edit was that the article specifically talks about the need for a "stricter legal framework for transgender inclusion in sports", and I was confused when you said that it's a propaganda piece being used "to frame generalized trans discrimination". But now I better understand what you meant by "political football", so thanks for clarifying. > Were you born yesterday or are you just trying to argue with people? Aide re, this wasn't necessary.
- kristopolous 5y agoSome people think they're very clever playing dumb with this stuff when they know exactly what's going on. It's one of the most insipid responses. I've dealt with it a lot. This is one of the exact topics where it happens because trans people have become the newest punching bag of online neonazis and fascists. They're obsessed with transphobia. That's where I first heard this "debate" about weightlifters years ago. Crap like this from 2018: https://therightscoop.com/gavin-hubbard-is-destroying-competition-in-weightlifting-because-he-says-hes-a-woman/ https://therightscoop.com/gavin-hubbard-is-destroying-compet... deadnaming and misgendering. And from 2017: https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/whatever-he-wins-is-worthless-transgender-man-competes-in-womens-weightlift https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/whatever-he-wins-is-worthl... This exact person and this exact issue has been used to push sensationalist transphobic screeds for years Playing dumb is thoroughly bad faith trolling and I have absolutely no patience for their bs.
- herodoturtle 5y ago> Playing dumb is thoroughly bad faith trolling and I have absolutely no patience for their bs. I completely agree with this sentiment. My biological brother is trans and I support him as best I can. It's particularly tricky for him given the cultural conservatism of our community (which I'm guessing you can relate to if my assumption about your username is correct). I know what you mean about trolls. And can see why you thought I may have been trolling you. My initial point was sincere - albeit a bit naive it seems. Evidently I am not as politically astute as you. Edit: thanks for the links. Will check them out.
- kristopolous 5y agoThe important thing is to just refuse these things. Like with Willie Horton, it moved the debate on criminal justice reform to be replaced by a specific case where it didn't work. It's a Lee Atwater technique, he did the Welfare Queen and Willie Horton political projects. It's marketing positioning applied to politics. Here, it's an attempt to move the discussion on human rights for transgendered people to instead be about a New Zealand weightlifter. Just refuse the discussion. The bait and switch reframing is the technique. It doesn't matter what's said, it matters that the discussion focuses on it instead of broad human rights.
