This is a very passionately written article but quite one sided. For example:
> Learn how your tax money is spent. Very little of it goes to welfare or education. Almost all of it goes to support reckless military spending and corporate bailouts in myriad forms.
This seems to be written from the perspective of federal taxes alone but even that seems inaccurate. Defense spending is just 16% of the federal budget (https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/where-do-our-fe... ). Around 2/3 of the total federal budget goes to various forms of government run safety nets and benefits. K-12 is largely funded by states and local budgets (https://www.cbo.gov/topics/education https://www.cbo.gov/topics/education). Even just considering K-12 (excluding higher education), we spend more on that than on the defense budget (https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2019/school-spending.html https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2019/school-s...). Once you toss in higher education, it is a significantly larger amount of spending than defense.
- throwaway1777 5y agoThanks for citing actual stats. It’s amazing how the military always ends up being a scapegoat for government spending. The high dollar amounts sound impressive until you see the rest of the spending…
- rkk3 5y ago> The high dollar amounts sound impressive until you see the rest of the spending… 2001 - 2019 we spent 6.4 Trillion on our Wars in the ME to spread Liberal Democracy, that is 1.5x the entire 2019 Budget. That is a a lot of money for a questionable cause. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/20/us-spent-6point4-trillion-on-middle-east-wars-since-2001-study.html https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/20/us-spent-6point4-trillion-on...
