I used to work in the telecom world back then. I would have thought that by 2021 the meticulously-architected ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) standard would have replaced the ancient TCP/IP protocol. Nope.
Then I would be wrong again, because I would have thought IPv6 would be everywhere...
- the_only_law 5y agoHeh I toy around with a lot of retro networking/telecom stuff. Mostly ISDN and X.25, but a little Frame Relay and I’ve also considered purchasing some equipment to toy with ATM. I find it more interesting than the IP monoculture we have now.
- Dracophoenix 5y agoIt doesn't seem like TCP/IP is ever going to die. The closest standard to killing it was OSI.
- rjsw 5y agoAround 1990, OSI looked to be winning, TCP/IP was a workstation-only thing.
- mcv 5y agoI learned about bothTCP/IP and ARM in university, and my take-away was that ARM was specifically for phone calls, not data. Maybe that perception held it back. Or maybe TCP/IP was simply too entrenched. Even IPv6 has been unable to replace IPv4.
