New Zealand Weightlifter Will Be the First Openly Trans Competitor at Olympics
- Arbalest 5y agoSo before we get comments about MtF having an advantage of male muscle or something, let's not forget that intersex and other hormonal conditions are permitted to compete in the Olympics as female too.
- rpmisms 5y agoExcept that in some cases, women with unusually high natural testosterone production are banned from competing in the Olympics. (Source)[https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/maryanngeorgantopoulos/caster-semenya-testosterone-ruling https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/maryanngeorgantopoulos/...] Personal opinion is that this should be case-by-case for now, with a third party determining whether it provides a specific advantage. Kind of like Oscar Pistorius.
- throwhacker 5y agoAs much of a victory this is for LGBTQ+ rights, this kind of content just doesn't belong on this site. This is "Hacker News".
- slater 5y agoIf you register a new account just to post this, maybe spend a minute or two evaluating your opinions?
- throwhacker 5y agoI'm not sure what you mean. Can you please explain more?
- andyxor 5y ago> Before her transition, Hubbard competed in men's events, setting national records in junior competition is this a joke, how is this fair to female weightlifters
- rpmisms 5y agoIt's not, but there's currently no way to evaluate if it's fair on a case-by-case basis, and there's opposition to that for various reasons. Generalizations hurt, and saying all trans athletes threaten women's sports isn't fair. Saying that there's potential for abuse would be more accurate.
- randomopining 5y agoLet’s just have XX and XY bathrooms and sports so we can end this fruitless discussion lol.
- rpmisms 5y agoThat just switches the issues to slightly different subsets of people, and also bars trans people from using bathrooms that match their identity.
