I have a few friends working on masters and phds in the humanities. it's very tough getting a job in academia, but it's not exactly easy to get a relevant job in the private sector either. I'm sure some of them believe they are the special ones that will actually get tenure-track positions, but I think there's also an element of simply not being ready for school to be "over". I really struggled with school and find employment to be much more straightforward. but these people really thrive in the academic environment.
