History classes in college were amongst the most enlightening for me because they were some of the most different from high school, having to focus almost entirely on reading and analyzing primary sources. They taught me a lot about the historian mindset that you see on places like askhistorians and behind the critical eye when it comes to reviewing history books that might be too opinionated.
That said, from a pragmatic perspective, this does explain why there wouldn't be a lot of jobs. How many people do you need to research the same stuff over and over, and how qualified do you have to be to teach somebody how to think in the historian mindset?
The unfortunate reality is there should be fewer Phds being churned out in a lot of fields if those degrees can't translate into non-academic positions.
If you want to be liberal arts Phd, you better be preparing to be the best of the bunch if you want to remain in academia.
