I read through the whole discussion on github. I understand the author's concerns and point of view, but his response to the NixOS maintainers and way of dealing with the situation was completely unreasonable.
The NixOS people seemed willing to work and do what it took to make it work, up to and including rewriting the functionality using an identical API. The author refused to compromise, discuss anything and got fairly hostile and was pretty rude.
It might be slightly more understandable if the author had been getting a barrage of complaints from users, but this hadn't even happened, he was preemptively assuming(you know what happens when you assume things...) it would and refusing to listen to the assurances of the NixOS people about taking responsibility for this.
All the author really has to do is make it clear somewhere that they won't support any users using a non-official packaged version of the software.
